The edge connector is the portion of the expansion card which is inserted into the expansion slot. It has copper leads which interface the components of the card into the elements of the computer's ~data bus~. If the card has only one connector, it is an 8-bit card. These are the standard on the older XT-class computers. If two connectors are present, it is a 16-bit card. This standard was introduced with the AT-class machine. The larger card capacity allows more information to be handled faster.
